Teaching Experience

In the past 7 years, I have changed from unruly young man to commited wushu teacher/coach. This journey has taught me a lot about myself and others. From my experience teaching I have also learnt that every student will teach me new things. This knowledge and the feeling that accompanied it is something I will never forget. Teaching has given me perspective on the importance of being patient, forgiving and a providing a good example for my students. While teaching I have encountered students with a variety of problems ranging from physical, mental and emotional sources. I found that these issues can arise from their emotional states, their normal way of thinking, and commonly from stresses that they have unknowingly brought with them. In the past I have been able to gain sufficient trust with my students that they feel comfortable sharing in some of these feelings to help them releasing their concerns.

I remember a female student from Europe. During the day she was a very happy, lively person, but whenever class started her happiness and calm was disturbed by an inner turmoil. After training her for a while, she began to trust me more and confide some of her doubts so that we could work through this difficulty for her.

Her initial suspicions were that the problem rested within her body, I however believed it was her mind. During our conversations she shared that her reason for coming to Wudangshan was to learn Taijiquan and Qi Gong to improve her health and upon her return home to teach the things she had learnt. However, this goal had also made her very strict with herself, so the small things got larger and more cumbersome inside her mind. During this time I encouraged her to have faith in herself. Reminding her that she was still in Wudangshan and to return her concern to the here and now, as this may be the only time she has an opportunity like this and to make the

most of it instead of worrying about the future before it has occured.

Every student will be different. I have taught people of all ages, both genders and from a variety of cultural

backgrounds. They were all significantly different to teach, so I had to find a way to that was appropriate for their mind, body and ways of doing things. I knew that I needed this variety to be sure that I would be able to approach new situations in my future with the same confidence. One size does not fit all.

One of the greatest lessons I've learnt through this is how to step back and take in the wider perspective so that I can see the

clearest path forward. Even after they leave, students of mine having had such a positive experience stay in touch with me. As a result, I have made many friends around the world that I maintain contact with to this day. Life is like the Taiji symbol, it is forever moving, forever changing and can accept everything in itself.
